Nestled at over 10,000 feet in the majestic Eastern Himalayas, Tawang is a spiritual sanctuary and a Himalayan gem of Arunachal Pradesh. Famed for its ancient Tawang Monastery, the largest in India and second-largest in Asia—this tranquil town is a blend of Tibetan Buddhist culture, snow-capped peaks, and untouched beauty.

Surrounded by alpine lakes like Madhuri Lake, dramatic passes like Sela, and historic war memorials, Tawang is not just a destination, it’s a soulful experience. The fluttering prayer flags, warm-hearted Monpa hospitality, and scenic drives make it a perfect retreat for seekers of peace, culture, and adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1: Guwahati to Bomdila
  • Depart early for a thrilling high-altitude drive.
  • Pickup from Guwahati (before 11AM)
  • Scenic drive through Assam's tea gardens and Arunachal’s foothills
  • Inner Line Permit Check at Bhalukpong (entry to Arunachal)
  • Reach Bomdila, a peaceful mountain town
  • Overnight Stay Bomdila
Day 2: Bomdila to Tawang (Approx. 6–7 hrs | 140 km)
  • Depart early for a thrilling high-altitude drive.
  • Cross the mighty Sela Pass (13,700 ft) – snow guaranteed in winters!
  • Stop at the Frozen Sela Lake for photos and tea.
  • Visit Jaswant Garh War Memorial (honoring a 1962 Indo-China war hero)
  • Witness the majestic Nuranang Waterfall near Jang
  • Visit ~700 years old Chakzam Bridge.
  • Reach Tawang by evening, altitude ~10,000 ft
  • Stay: Tawang
Day 3: Tawang Local Sightseeing
  • Visit the historic Tawang Monastery – the largest in India, 400+ years old.
  • Explore Urgyelling Monastery – birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
  • Stop at Tawang War Memorial (light & sound show in the evening).
  • Walk around the vibrant local market for Tibetan souvenirs.
  • Optional: Visit the Craft Center for wool and woodcrafts.
  • Stay: Tawang
Day 4: Bum La Pass & Holy Waterfall (Permit Required)
  • Early morning drive to Bum La Pass (India-China Border).
  • Pass through Army zones, snow deserts & glacial views.
  • Chumi Gyatse – Holy Waterfall – a sacred waterfall with 108 water streams, revered by Buddhists & Hindus.
  • Return to Tawang by evening
  • Stay: Tawang
Day 5: Madhuri Lake Excursion & Taktsang Gompa
  • Explore P.T. Tso Lake en route (seasonal snow/sunset beauty).
  • Visit Sangetsar Lake (Madhuri Lake) – formed after an earthquake, the film spot of Koyla.
  • Taktsang Gompa – The Tiger's Den Monastery.
  • Stay: Tawang
Day 6: Tawang to Bomdila (Approx. 6 hrs | 180 km)
  • Scenic downhill drive with stops at viewpoints
  • Visit Bomdila Monastery – peaceful and picturesque
  • Explore local market for traditional masks, carpets, and woolens
  • Stay: Bomdila
Day 7: Bomdila to Guwahati (Approx. 8–9 hrs | 270 km)
  • Start your return journey to Guwahati
  • Drive through lush hills and Assamese countryside
  • Drop at Guwahati Airport in the evening before 6 PM
  • Trip ends with unforgettable memories of Arunachal’s landscapes, culture & adventure

NOTE:   In case of a sudden snowfall, The Atal Tunnel can be shut by the authorities for traffic movement and in that case it won't be possible to travel to Sissu. In such a case, we will look to explore alternative sightseeing options as per feasibility.

NOTE:   The age limit of our group departures is 18 to 40 years due to the power packed itineraries that we provide to our travellers. We can customise trips for travellers beyond the mentioned age bracket.
